How to Worship Tulsi & Tulsi Namashtakam
Tulsi Worship Method
On 25th December, after taking a bath in the morning, place the Tulsi plant pot in a clean area of the house, slightly elevated from the ground. Offer water to Tulsi while reciting this mantra:
Mahaprasada Janani Sarva Saubhagya Vardhini
Adhi Vyadhi Hara Nityam Tulasi Tvam Namostute
(O Tulsi, mother of the sacred offering, enhancer of all good fortune, remover of ailments and distress, I bow to you.)
Then, while chanting the mantra “Tulasyai Namah”, apply tilak, offer rice grains (akshata), flowers, cloth, and some prasad. Light a lamp, perform the aarti, and circumambulate Tulsi 7, 11, 21, 51, or 108 times. In that pure atmosphere, sit peacefully, pray to the Lord, and chant the divine name or Guru mantra. Sitting near Tulsi and practicing pranayama increases strength, wisdom, and vitality.
Distribute prasad with Tulsi leaves. Stay awake near Tulsi until midnight, engaging in bhajans, kirtans, satsang listening, and chanting, thereby attaining divine rest. Reciting the Tulsi Namashtakam is also highly meritorious. Tulsi worship can be performed in your nearby ashram, Tulsi grove, or any sacred place as convenient.
Tulsi Namashtakam
Vrindam Vrindavanim Vishvapavanim Vishvapujitam
Pushpasaram Nandini Cha Tulasi Krishnajivanam
Etannamashtakam Chaitat Stotram Namarthasamyutam
Yah Pathettam Cha Sampujya So’ashvamedha Phalam Labhet
(Translation: Vrinda, Vrindavani, purifier of the world, worshipped by all, essence of flowers, giver of joy, Tulsi, and life-force of Krishna — these are the eight names of Tulsi Devi. This sacred hymn composed of her names grants the merit of performing the Ashvamedha Yajna to one who worships Tulsi and recites it.)
Lord Narayana tells Sage Narada: “Vrinda, Vrindavani, Vishvapavani, Vishvapujita, Pushpasara, Nandini, Tulsi, and Krishnajivani — these are the eight names of Tulsi Devi. This meaningful collection of names forms a hymn. Whoever worships Tulsi and recites this Namashtakam attains the merit equal to performing the Ashvamedha sacrifice.”
(Brahmavaivarta Purana, Prakriti Khanda 22.32–33)
So in essence, this text describes the ritual of Tulsi worship on December 25th, the benefits of devotion near Tulsi, and the recitation of Tulsi Namashtakam, which carries immense spiritual merit.
